The Lying Woods by Ashley Elston

Reviewed by Melissa Beck (Library Staff)

The tangled roots of this taut mystery unfold in alternating chapters and these parallel narratives were the perfect way to tell this story, growing the tension steadily to the point where I could not put it down.

Present day we follow Owen, a boy who has just been sent home from his fancy boarding school because his father has embezzled millions from their family’s business and run off with the money. Just trying to survive day to day in a town where everyone blames him for their financial misfortunes, Owen begins working at a pecan orchard as a retreat, but also to piece together some truth about his father, who also spent a summer working at the orchard. Every other chapter takes us through the story of Owen’s dad meeting Owen’s mom during his summer at the orchard.

I have been telling everyone I know how much this story impressed me, and now here I am jabbering at YOU about this book! You should probably read it just to shut me up.
