Reviews lauded this selection as a cross between “Jane Eyre” and “Downton Abbey”, drawing my interest immediately. But the characters are poorly drawn. The plot relies too heavily on lucky circumstances to resolve conflict. The romantic entanglements are dull.
Readers looking for historical fiction on the cusp of World War One with well crafted characters and fun plots should look at Tasha Alexander and Fay Weldon.
