I recently had the privilege to hear the author Nickolas Butler speak at a library conference. He was witty, self-deprecating and fun, much like his first literary effort, Shotgun Lovesongs. It follows the adventures of Hank, Ronny, Kip and Lee, four childhood friends, as the grow up and grow out of their tiny town in western Wisconsin. Himself an Eau Claire native, Butler infuses the novel with descriptions that every Wisconsonite knows well: long winters, farming communities, salt-of-the-earth residents. In fact, some of these descriptions can be a bit long winded. Nonetheless, Shotgun Lovesongs is an ode to all things Wisconsin and leaves me intrigued to try his other offerings.
