Grant by Ron Chernow

Reviewed by Stephanie Ramirez (Library Staff)

Ron Chernow delivers a masterclass in writing yet again with the follow up to his Pulitzer-Prize winning “Hamilton”, this time featuring a lesser known President, Ulysses S. Grant. Chernow’s research and dedication to his work is astounding. Of course he covers Grant’s well documented time as a General in the Civil War but also delves into Grant’s personal life: his hard-driving and abrasive father, his long love affair with his wife Julia, his friendship and devotion with his fellow soldiers in the war. Chernow challenges long-held assumptions about Grant as well, chief among them that he was an alcoholic. Truly a wonder of presidential scholarship.
