Darnisha Garbade will discuss the history of Juneteenth and why it’s important today.

About Darnisha Garbade:

  • Founder and President of the Burlington Coalition For Dismantling Racism (also known as BCDR), which is a grassroots social justice organization that was founded in 2019 in response to her own African American children enduring consistent, severe and pervasive racial discrimination within their predominantly white school district.
  • Current Board & Task force Member of the Racine Interfaith Coalition (also known as RIC), which is a social justice organization that addresses issues like immigration, voter rights and systemic racism in education within Racine, WI.
  • Vice President of a statewide social justice organization called WISDOM, which addresses statewide issues within Wisconsin.
  • Organizer for a social justice organization called, “A Case Of Unequal Justice” (also known as ACOUJ) where she and others are fighting for the release of those who are incarcerated due to sentencing disparities.

Prior to working on Social Justice issues, Darnisha had a 20 year career in the healthcare industry, where she worked in various areas of specialty, including Family Practice, Cardiology, Mental Health, Home Care & Hospice. Darnish’s a doting wife, mother and grandmother of 8 children and 2 grandchildren within her blended biracial family. Darnisha has a strong Christian faith background, which keeps her grounded and enjoys helping others, spending time with family and friends, listening to music and traveling.
