Archeologist and UW-Milwaukee Professor David B. Pacifico explores the history of beer from a pre-Columbian Andean perspective.
David discusses how chicha – Andean corn beer – was made in the ancient Andes by the Incas and their ancestors. He also explores the significance of chicha in rituals and everyday life for major Andean cultures. David presents how his discovery of the materials for making chicha at the ancient city of El Purgatorio helped him reconstruct social life in that pre-Columbian capital.
David has participated in research in Peru since 2001 and is now also the director of the Emile H. Mathis Art Gallery and UWM Art Collection in addition to being a practicing archaeologist and assistant professor of art history.
