City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

Reviewed by Melissa Beck (Library Staff)

Cassidy’s parents move the family to Edinburgh to film the first episode of their new ghost hunting reality television series. Moving to one of the most haunted cities in the world proves challenging for Cassidy because (unlike her parents) she can see ghosts, which is becoming increasingly dangerous and confusing.

While this middle grade supernatural tale didn’t have quite as much substance as I was hoping for (wisps of ectoplasmic plot and ho-hum main characters evaporating from my brain nearly immediately) the atmospheric Scotland setting and the vibrant supporting characters have really stayed with me—not to mention the mouth-watering descriptions of eating fish and chips!

This was a pitch-perfect fall read and I’m looking forward to reading the next one, but I hope it digs a little deeper into Cassidy and her BGFF (best ghost friend forever) Jacob.
