What Is a database?
Definition: a usually large collection of data organized especially for rapid search and retrieval (as by a computer) [from Merriam-Webster OnLine].

Use these links when searching from inside the Library.

Most of the following links are for home research.
Subscription databases are important tools to help you do research from your home computer or from one of the Library's Internet Computers. The entries below describe their uses.

Ancestry Library Edition is a new genealogy research tool created for the library market. It provides patrons with instant access to a wide range of unique resources for genealogical and historical research. With more than 1.5 billion names in over 4,000 databases, Ancestry Library Edition includes records from the United States Census; military records; court, land and probate records; vital and church records; directories; passenger lists and more! These collections are continuously expanding, with new content added every business day. Through this site, you can:

  • Cross-search thousands of databases by single or multiple elements.
  • Jump directly to specific collections or databases.
  • Browse collections by state, province or country.
  • Browse original, full-text digital images in the census, immigration and military collections.
  • Download digital images in JPEG and GIF formats for more extensive viewing and printing.

heritage-quest

Hertiage Quest offers every extant U.S. federal census, family genealogies, local histories, tax lists, city directories, land and probate records, birth, marriage and death records, genealogical and local history serials, and more.

Wisconsin Heritage Online is an expanding digital collection, featuring documentary sources and material culture from Wisconsin libraries, archives, and museums. BadgerLink provides access to EBSCO's journals and magazines, including Search for Kids; Newspaper Archive, BadgerLink Songbook Database, WISCAT statewide library catalog, World Cat and many other useful links to Wisconsin Public Libraries, Wisconsin Digital Library Collections, Library Directories, Government Sites, Education Sites, Web Portals.

wis newspapersWisconson Newspapers

Wisconsin Newspapers Digital Research Site is a service of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association. It provides access to the daily and weekly newspapers in Wisconsin, starting in 2005 to the present, with an embargo delay of 60 days. The BadgerLink team has worked with the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA) to improve Wisconsin newspapers in BadgerLink. Through this new partnership, WNA’s Wisconsin Newspapers Digital Research Site will provide access to its 235 daily and weekly member-newspapers. Each addition is covered cover to cover in a PDF, searchable format. This service is available onsite in libraries of all types (except for corporate libraries) and throughentry of a library card number. It is not available statewide through IP address authentication as are other BadgerLink resources. Link>>

NetLibrary allows county residents may sign up to check-out, or download, electronic books. After initial sign-up at your Waukesha County library, Netlibrary may be accessed from home.   >> NetLibrary Link<<

GaleNet can be used in Waukesha County public libraries to access Contemporary Authors and Contemporary Literary Criticism. The Gale Literary Databases provide full-text criticism and interpretation of plays, novels, poetry and short stories, and biographical essays on authors.

lit finder

LitFinder is a resource that provides quick and easy access to poems, stories, speeches, plays or essays that best suit a user's needs. Poetry is the core of LitFinder as more than 126,500 full-text poems are included along with 850,000 more poem citations. In addition, users will be able to read 10,000 full-text plays, stories, essays and speeches using LitFinder!

NoveList K-8 contains enhanced subject access for over 60,000 fiction titles aimed at the K-8 population.

Literary Reference Center contains full text of plot summaries, synopses and work overviews, articles/essays of literary criticism, author biographies, literary journals, book reviews, classic and contemporary poems, classic and contemporary short stories, author interviews, and much more.

Home Improvement Reference Center provides home improvement assistance, including: maintenance, remodeling, electrical work, plumbing, wood projects, outdoor improvements, decorating home & garden, etc. It contains 27 major reference works in full text with more than 10,000 images, nearly 100 videos of popular home repair projects, a convenient A-Z browsing tool, and full-text magazines (e.g. This Old House).

Consumer Health Complete provides content covering all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated medicine.
